Kathryn Blake, Composer in Residence | Viola
Kathryn Blake is a vibrant composer, violist, and collaborator based in Maryland. Her compositions have been premiered by percussionist Jonathan Sotelo, cellist Christian Hartman, the Bergamot Quartet, the Strata Trio, and by Balance Campaign. Her work has been featured in the District New Music Coalition's Fall Conferences in 2020 & 2021, as well as part of T1International’s “Change Through Creativity” project as part of National Diabetes Awareness Month in 2020. Her work for solo percussion, Just Ordinary, placed 3rd in Media Press Music’s 2021 Solo Percussion Composition Contest, and is published with Media Press Music. Kathryn is the resident composer & violist of the Achelois Collective, and is one of the founding Members.
Kathryn was the principal violist in the UMBC Symphony under direction of Dr. E. Michael Richards and Jason Love from 2019-21. As an active chamber musician, Kathryn has premiered string quartets by Donte Speaks Jr. & Eliza Triolo. She is currently forming a viola-cello duo with cellist Jeremy Keaton. Kathryn maintains a small private studio of violinists and violists, where she teaches school-age children and aids their passion and enjoyment of music; she also has her own composition student through and an internship with the Frederick County Academy for the Fine Arts.
